Nutmeg

Nutmeg is a spice made from the seed of the nutmeg tree cultivated for two spices derived from its fruit: nutmeg from its seed, and mace from the seed covering.

The world production of nutmeg is estimated to average between 10,000 and 12,000 metric tons per year and nutmegs are mainly exported to Europe and Asia.

The main nutmeg producing countries are Indonesia, India, Guatemala, West Indies and Sri Lanka. Nutmeg consuming markets are the European Union, North America and East Asia.

Sri Lanka produces more than 550 metric tons annually and Indonesia and Grenada dominate production and exports of both products, with world market shares of 75 percent and 20 percent respectively.
